Don't Just Teach History - LIVE IT!

Harsh New England Winters!

Sieges! Living in a Lean-to with Multiple Families...Imagine!

The settlers of the Fort at No. 4 had to endure all of these things and more. Your experience won't be as harrowing, but you'll become a part of the 18th century as you connect with a piece of our country's past.

More than 250 years ago, during the French and Indian War era, courageous pioneers traveled to New England's northermost frontier with remarkable determination to build a new life for their families. Their extraordinary experiences are brought to life each day at The Fort at No. 4 Living History Museum located on the Connecticut River.

Students who visit The Fort don't just learn about history, they live it! Our costumed historical interpreters guide students through an experience that allows them to explore how the settlers lived, worked and played, through uniquely designed "hands-on" programs.

While offering interactive learning experiences for staudents of all ages, our special focus is on programs that complement the fourth through eighth grade state curriculumn guidelines.

The Fort works hand-in-hand with teachers to recreate the life of our earliest settlers, through school group day tours and our overnight adventures.

A Day at The Fort

Proceed through the south gate of The Fort and experience a day in the life of an 18th century settler.

  • Churn butter
  • Trade & barter
  • Play 18th century games

Day tour participants visit five province houses and the gift shop and experience the culture of the 18th century settlers along the Connecticut River Valley.

Programs begin at 10 a.m. sharp and run approximately 2 1/2 hours. The cost is $5 per student and/or adult. The bus driver is always free, as is one chaperone per 10 students booked.

An Overnight Program Set in the Past

  • Tend to chores of the time period
  • Churn butter
  • Make bread
  • Dip candles for light
  • Prepare the Evening Meal
  • Trade & barter food for dinner

Be sure to get enough rest because you never know when the call will go out for a militia drill!

All of this is part of the Fort's special overnight program that provides students with a unique opportunity to live and learn in the past. Overnights start as early as 2 p.m. on day one and run until 9:45 a.m. the next morning at a cost of $35 per student and $30 per teacher or chaperone. Please note the minimum number of students to book this experience is 15 along with a minimum of 4 teachers or chaperones. The maximum number booked is 50 students which requires 10 teachers or chaperones at minimum. No overnight programs can be booked on any of our scheduled event weekends.
