About the event
The settlers at the Fort at No 4 needed the Abenaki as they forged into the northern wilderness-- even as relations were complicated and alliances continually shifted. The Abenaki, with their intimate knowledge of the Connecticut River Valley, shared hunting, fishing, and foraging techniques, traded furs, pelts and foodstuffs, and served as intermediaries between the French and the British who garrisoned the Fort. The cooperation, trade, and mutual benefits of coexistence were a part of daily life on the northernmost frontier of British settlement, despite the worldwide conflicts.
